Genderpoli plot

Is a child with an IQ below 85 able to decide that he does not want a boy's but a girl's body? How do you deal with a trans teenager who is severely depressed? And can a fifteen-year-old child estimate whether he or she wants to have children of his or her own in the future? For almost a year, Ingrid Kamerling filmed at a gender clinic in Zaandam, where trans young people discuss their possible transition.

Portrait of the employees of the Gender Poli in Zaandam, where young people can go with questions about gender identity and can take an important step towards transition, outlines the struggle in society with the changing insights surrounding gender identity. The diversity in gender identity of the staff is intended to be closer to the clients on both a personal and professional level. But mutual communication, both verbal and written, is regularly the subject of discussion. A typical example is the proposal to add an automatic signature to internal and external emails in which the sender mentions the desired form of address. This feels uncomfortable for cisgender man Sander de Wit, but in the eyes of transgender woman Bianca it is so important for that reason. Kamerling was also allowed to follow a number of conversations with clients and their parents, on the basis of which they assess a request for transition. The request of a girl born as a boy with an intellectual disability proves to be particularly difficult. The human touch still predominates, but constant cutbacks are making it increasingly difficult for these enthusiastic professionals to do their work in a clean manner. An extremely fascinating documentary that, despite the heavy themes, never becomes sentimental or heavy-handed.
