The Border Crossed Us plot

While a large white surveillance airship hovers continuously above the Texas border town of La Joya, local police officers comb the area for human smugglers. Everywhere along the border there are traces of people trying to reach the United States via the Rio Grande. But instead of arresting immigrants, the agents collect information about the smugglers and their bosses linked to Mexican cartels. This documentary tells how police chief Ramon Gonzalez, detective Manuel Casas and officer Mayra Garza deal with the daily problems of living along the border.

Van der Horst follows three Americans who are involved in the fight against smugglers who help people illegally cross the border from Mexico to the United States. The title refers to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), in which Mexico lost approximately 1.3 million km². The interviewers portrayed are descendants of Mexicans and that makes the work they do extra difficult. Van der Horst is not looking for sensationalism, nor for demonizing immigrants or the investigation services. Above all, she shows that the so-called “immigration problem” is in fact an economic model that benefits many people financially. The cartels organize the illegal crossing; local residents can earn a lot of extra money by helping the cartels and the police receive extra pay for the overtime they work to combat human smuggling. The content is interesting, but after half an hour most has been said and shown.
