As an only child, Sofia [Emma Mackey] guides her disabled mother, Rose [Fiona Shaw], through an exorbitantly expensive stay at Dr. Gomez's [Vincent Perez] clinic, hoping he can help Rose overcome her medically unexplained disability. The strained relationship between mother and daughter is given a boost by the appearance of the angelic Ingrid [Vicky Krieps], who makes it clear to Sofia that her life doesn't have to be inextricably linked to her mother. The psychological drama quickly overflows with simmering tension, but seemingly doesn't know where to go. It beats around the bush, tests one's patience to the limit, and ends on an anticlimactic note. This slow-burner never even catches fire! The trailer is much better.

Vicky Krieps clearly has the talent to get into interesting films.

This one too—I should probably point out the difference between interesting and good, because I need to sleep on it and see the film again in a week or so, and maybe even read the book, because in some areas it feels like there's a lot left to be done. On the other hand, this is definitely one of those films where all the pieces of the puzzle just seem to fit together.

Regarding the cast, there's nothing but positive news – Mackey isn't intimidated by all the "big" names and delivers a completely credible and compelling performance. Perez is brilliant in his role as the elusive mystical faith healer with a charlatan registration; I didn't even recognize him, if I'm being honest. And Krieps, yes, he delivers a true Krieps performance once again – himself, without being himself, and that too is a talent few possess. And finally, and perhaps the most beautiful role and the ugliest character – Fiona Shaw's all-controlling and demanding nasty old lady. The manipulation could have been a bit more overblown, but that's about it.

That anticlimax my two predecessors mentioned? I see it quite differently. If you read the book and compare it to the film's story, you might form an opinion about how well the book was adapted, but as a film, it works well enough for me even without that. Reading and reviewing it will probably only make it better.
