Vogels Kun Je Niet Melken plot

Farmer Bote de Boer from Tjerkwerd Súdwest-Fryslân is eagerly looking forward to the arrival of the godwit. This meadow bird is hardly seen in the whole of Friesland, but it continues to come to him, even in large numbers. This year too, everything is ready for his arrival. The groundwater is high, the ponds have been created. Just the way the godwits like it.

The documentary contains a mini-drama about the difficulties of modern farming life: in order to finance the necessary renovation of a stable, the farming family being followed would have to convert the 'old land' that is for the meadow birds into grassland where extra cows can graze in order to secure the company's profit, but the pater familias does not feel like doing that because he lives for the protection of the birds. One son draws his conclusions and buys a farm in Portugal while the other son, who wants to take over his father's company, sulks that the birds are blocking his future. This drama is not very exciting, but the documentary is saved by the beautiful nature images of all kinds of wild animals (from insects to the peregrine falcon that lurks for the meadow birds) that can be found on the farm.

The umpteenth wonderful documentary for broadcaster HUMAN is about the De Boer family from Tjerkwerd. Father Bote has significantly reduced the milk production of his farm in the past 10 years in favor of landscape management, mainly out of love for the black-tailed godwit. Everyone thinks it's great that he does that, but "it just comes out of it". Son Jan Jochem (Bote's intended successor) therefore sees no other option than to get more cows, produce more milk and spend less time and money on landscape management. Makkinga is present at the confrontational conversations at the dinner table about the future of the company and many endless conversations with organizations that would like to support Bote financially, but never come through. Son Marc decides to set up a farm life in Portugal, where he has much more freedom and security as a farmer. Jan Jochem and Bote symbolize what many Dutch farmers want most: to combine a healthy business operation with a stable income with love and respect for nature. The beautiful nature images by specialists Jeffrey van Houten and Dirk Harrewijn remind us time and again what Bote is all about. An authentic portrait of a down-to-earth farming family that is almost driven to despair by empty promises and/or a lack of decisiveness by the government (and citizens). A must for anyone who wants to gain some insight into what I lazily describe as the 'farmer's problem'.
