Against the Tide plot

The fishermen friends Rakesh and Ganesh are children of the sea. The sea gave them identity, offered them food and in its great security their brotherhood grew. They are Kolis, the indigenous fishing people of Mumbai. But the sea they have always known is changing before their eyes; she becomes warmer and emptier. For the friends, who depend on the catch, this threatens their livelihood and their friendship.

Fishermen Rakesh and Ganesh were raised with traditional fishing methods. But competition is fierce and stricter regulations (including night fishing with LED lights) make it almost impossible to hold on to a centuries-old family tradition. Some knowledge of fishing comes in handy to understand the issues. Kaur also shows the austere circumstances under which Rakesh and Ganesh have to support their families. The storyline is a bit on the thin side and although it advertises itself as cinema verite, there are many scenes that seem to have been reenacted. Entertaining, but not entirely convincing.
