Before Dawn plot

Jim Collins, a young man from the Outback, leaves his family-run sheep station during the First World War to join the soldiers on the Western Front in the hope of making a difference. Soon the reality of the muddy and brutal war takes its toll on the guilt-ridden Jim. As the men in the battalion wither away and hope becomes a distant memory, a final chance for redemption arrives in one of Australia's greatest battles. Jim must risk death or forever bear the burden of leaving another man behind.

Yet another war film that shows the ups and downs of a soldier. The comparison with '1917' is quickly made. This film does not reach that level by a long shot. Apart from a few action scenes, it is a rather sluggish whole. Just like the soldiers, we have to wait and see when the war will be over. Camaraderie and guilt predominate.

Actors do their best.

The action scenes are nice. Although of course a few of the most innocent boys die.

The hero saves himself from the most dire positions.

All in all, not a high flyer.

It's an original idea to portray World War I from an Australian perspective, but director Jordon Prince-Wright creates a rather small-scale and uninteresting war film. Levi Miller, moreover, is a disappointing lead, portraying a character somewhat unmotivatedly, knowing that Miller has played far more convincing roles in the past. The other cast members don't fare much better, making the lead-up to the farm far more compelling than the actual war. At times, Before Dawn is skillfully shot with clear shots of the parched landscape, but these are few highlights in a disappointing overall picture.
