I only really like a few of Santana's songs, but this documentary is the bomb. Santana comes across as very sympathetic, and his life story is told in a very interesting way. Beautiful images - perhaps not in a technical sense because there is also quite a bit of home video stuff in there, but it all adds up very nicely. And the music of course. Just the right songs too.

Very nice work by directing and editing, and one of the nicest talking-head documentaries I've seen so far.

The documentary is not so much about the music as about – as the title suggests – the person Carlos Santana. We learn that he comes from a musical family from Mexico (specifically Tijuana) where his father earned his (meager) living in a mariachi orchestra and his son Carlos learned to play the violin and Carlos got the determination from his mother with which he pursued his own musical career. When he heard an electric guitar, the violin went aside and he became a fast rising star in San Francisco with his band where he developed a Latin version of blues and psychedelic rock with his – accidentally under the influence of LSD – performance at Woodstock as his big breakthrough: especially the Latin approach to rock made him original and brought him success and fame. While many were succumbing to drugs (and Carlos also enjoyed them) and the band fell apart, he followed the teachings of a guru in 1971: instead of being 'far out' he learned to be 'far in'. The big success returned in 1999 with the album Supernatural with the hits Smooth and Maria Maria. The core of his life seems to be his interest in spirituality: his success is the result of his determination but it has no other goal than to grow as a person (which is more important than the music).
