Brokopondo: Stories of a Drowned Land plot

Thirty years ago, the construction of the Brokopondo dam and the hydroelectric power station built afterwards provided an enormous boost to the Surinamese economy. The downside was that this project created a reservoir that flooded 27 villages, forcing five thousand Surinamese Maroons to flee their country, which had until then been isolated from Western civilization. Only now are people becoming aware of the extreme consequences of this project for the indigenous population.
