Tegendraads plot

The film is set in the Twente textile industry of the early 1960s and follows the young worker Johanna, who wants to rise up against the social conditions of the time. Her struggle coincides with economic reconstruction and the arrival of the first guest workers from Italy. The growing tensions between the people of Twente and these newcomers ultimately lead to the Spaghetti Riots of September 3, 1961. Together with her new lover Francesco, Johanna finds herself in the eye of the storm.

In the early 1960s, Johanna [Emma Josten] works in a textile factory in Oldenzaal and dreams of a career as a fashion designer. In the meantime, unrest arises when a group of Italians come to work in the factory. Not only because they are seen as a threat to employment, but also because the young ladies are receptive to the Italian flirts. Will Johanna dare to exchange the safe Oldenzaal for a study in Arnhem? Josten (despite her uneven Twente accent) and D'Aquino are very good, the script by Jacqueline Epskamp unfortunately is not. Old-fashioned village drama jumps from one thing to another and provides little insight into the main characters' motivations.

“Tegendraads” gives a nice picture of the sixties in Twente. First came the Italians later followed by many other ethnicities that give the current street scene a color. Director Sombogaart chooses the safe way with a story with the depth of a surfboard, a romance between Tukker and Italian who would have thought? Fortunately it does not become Romeo & Juliette.

The story is set in Oldenzaal, the film locations are located elsewhere, such as the Enschede "Patmos". The textile factory is also not Twents, everything has disappeared here. This does not take away from the atmosphere of the 60s and the work in the textile industry that has been captured strikingly. The safe option was also chosen not to let the Twente dialect play a prominent role, it remains with some swallowing of syllables, so that the rest of the Netherlands can also enjoy this love story and understand what is being said, although the film is subtitled from beginning to end. Fortunately, the Italians do speak their native language.

It is certainly a nice film to see during the dark days, especially popular with the older audience is my impression. If you don't see it, you miss little, a crowd puller like "the legs of St. Hildegard" it is certainly not.
