Breaking Social plot

All societies are based on the idea of a social contract. We are told that if we work hard, if we treat others with respect, if we play by the rules, we will be rewarded. But then there are those who break the rules, take advantage of tax havens and reap profits without paying anything back to society. This documentary examines the global patterns of kleptocracy and extractivism, including a murdered investigative journalist in Malta, a dried up river in Chile and the impoverished state of West Virginia, where gas, coal and oil have been extracted for a century; all turning points that make people want to organize and protest.

Through conversations with philosophers and activists, Gertten denounces capitalist society. We are presented with an image of a human being who is essentially selfish and a world in which only the strongest survive. But isn't it true that it is precisely the friendliest, most social people who survive? And don't we see in times of crisis that people seek cooperation to come up with and implement solutions with bundled talents? Gertten uses a recent social upheaval in Chile as an example of how things can be done differently in this interesting, but visually unexciting documentary.
