The Night of the Assassin is a historical drama with a lot of action. A film made on a small budget. This can sometimes be seen in the choice to limit the scope of the setting to a static space, in which the characters do their thing. The film has at times spiced up something of a costume drama with excellently staged battle scenes.
Actually, the film just looks very pleasant. The only flaw is the story. The story of an icy assassin who is purified through encounters with the common people has been shown more than once. The scenario does not hide many surprises. The course of the story is fairly predictable.
The characters, on the other hand, are surprisingly interesting. Shin Hyun-joon's lead role as the sword-wielding assassin is simply amazing. The spiritual peace that the man radiates between the acts of violence is worth mentioning. Hong Eun-ki (once a member of a K-pop group) as a villainous villain also impresses. The other characters, who pass by in various degrees of expressiveness, are also excellently filled. The film is populated with curious, funny and lively characters. Nice.
The Night of the assassin is a nice mix of action and drama. Both film and acting technically very enjoyable. Unfortunately, the story is a bit simple. However, the other aspects make up for that shortcoming fairly well. I had a great time.
