Look Away plot

The documentary takes a closer look at a subject that the music industry has swept under the carpet for years: abuse of women. In the film, these women speak for the first time and testify about the abuse that some of them had to endure since their teens and that was tolerated by the music industry in the 1970s and 1980s. They share their experiences with powerful rock stars such as Steven Tyler and Axl Rose and Kim Fowley, the manager of teen group The Runaways.

A documentary about the abuse of underage women in the music industry around the 1970s and 1980s. Unfortunately, those who have their eyes and ears open a bit will not be surprised by this. The abuse of power by men was / is in many sectors, so certainly in a then mainly male industry such as rock music. Singers sang about it in their songs and nobody cared about it. How can you respond to this as a teenager? Who are people going to believe? A star like Iggy Pop or Steven Tyler? Or a 15-year-old who dresses a bit older because she wants to be an adult and join the glitz and glammer of the rock industry?

The documentary was not really successful as a film and remains mainly a standard documentary with archive footage and testimonies from an armchair. It also doesn't help if the rock stars distance themselves from the documentary and hardly any people from the industry come to testify to make this even more known. They are mainly testimonials from teenagers at the time, although the images also speak for themselves and you should certainly not be naive to write it off as untrue or 'they looked for it themselves'. I think it's important that these people have the chance to tell their story with this documentary, it's already an improvement compared to the past. Unfortunately, it won't change the industry. Although you can only applaud every (small) step forward.

An important documentary with clear explanations of serious abuse cases. Perhaps a standard format, but no less compelling. Deep respect for these strong personalities, even if the conclusion is not very encouraging, for now...
