The YouTube Effect plot
This documentary explores the rise and possible fall of YouTube, the world's most popular video website. Started in 2005 with a video of a trip to the zoo, YouTube has grown into a $300 billion empire. To incentivize its creators and keep users interested, it has developed an algorithm that tries to predict what users will be most interested in. However, the algorithm has created unforeseen privacy and ethical issues that could spell the website's downfall. YouTubers, reporters and pundits join filmmaker Alex Winter in questioning the ramifications of such an irregularity.
