The YouTube Effect plot

This documentary explores the rise and possible fall of YouTube, the world's most popular video website. Started in 2005 with a video of a trip to the zoo, YouTube has grown into a $300 billion empire. To incentivize its creators and keep users interested, it has developed an algorithm that tries to predict what users will be most interested in. However, the algorithm has created unforeseen privacy and ethical issues that could spell the website's downfall. In 2022, YouTube had 2.2 billion unique users and success depends mainly on an algorithm programmed to recommend videos with extreme content the most. This documentary examines how and why YouTube went from a blessing to a curse and who or what is responsible for that. Founder Steve Chen, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, journalists and content creators give their views and talk about their experiences. Well researched and solidly made with people who clearly know their stuff, but not exceptionally sensational. A good starting point for those who have not so far paid little attention to how YouTube works and it ends on an optimistic note.
