King of Clones plot

This documentary tells the story of Korea's most notorious scientist Hwang Woo-suk. Armed with a degree in veterinary medicine and a master's and doctorate in theriogenology, the study of animal reproduction, Hwang's rise to fame began with the successful cloning of cows and pigs. In 2002, Hwang began researching human cloning and teamed up with Moon Shin-yong, an obstetrician with expertise in in vitro fertilization. Their collaboration led to a major announcement in 2004 claiming the successful cloning of human embryos, with the potential to cure some diseases. The announcement sparked a heated debate over bioethics, despite Hwang and Moon insisting that their work was only for therapeutic purposes and that they strongly opposed reproductive cloning.

The South Korean stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-Suk now works in the United Arab Emirates, where he clones camels for beauty contests and camel races, among other things. In February 2004, he announced that he and obstetrician Moon Shin-Yong had found a way to clone human embryos. Journalist David Cyranoski was the only one who stuck his head above the parapet and placed serious question marks about the methodology and the research results. Rightly so, because the man who was initially labeled 'King Of Clones' is now a pariah in the world of science. All the protagonists contributed to this documentary and speak with remarkable sobriety about the how and what behind this scandal. Bioethicist Paul Root Wolpe cleverly elucidates both the science and ethical dilemmas surrounding cloning so that this never has to become a technical story. Thayi poses a tricky but intriguing question to Joe: Have we thrown the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to cloning because of the Woo-Suk scandal? The contribution of radiologist Alexander Ruebben makes that question difficult to answer.
