What inspired Ethan Coen to make a modern version of those terrible sex comedies disguised as road movies like Road Trip and Euro Trip? Qualley's Texan accent is really unpleasant to listen to - and not funny at all - and determines the quality of this hopeless lesbian crime comedy. Jamie [Margaret Qualley] and Marian [Geraldine Viswanathan] travel from Philadelphia to Tallahessee in a “Drive-away” with hidden luggage that was actually intended for criminals. Every scene revolves around sex or corny sexist jokes. Other attempts at humor are also completely dead. Only Feldstein can just get through with it, but only the good camera work of Ari Wegner keeps this misfire from the lowest possible rating.

As befits a comedy, the characters are caricatures and the plot is full of unbelievable twists, but the development of the plot is not original – the oversexed and the prudish find each other in real love and the criminals are so stupid that they working to destruction – and the humor is often on the bland side. I understand that the film is an ode to seventies pulp, which is reminiscent of Tarantino's approach in his films such as Grindhouse and Death Proof: the film was therefore made out of love for the old B-movie, perhaps out of nostalgia when as teenagers they only saw this kind of films were presented so that they made an impression, but at the same time that love or nostalgia is so great that they worked very accurately, consciously copying all the weak elements of the pulp, and the product itself does not reach the level of a B-movie transcends. The fact that it is in a sense a copy of the well-known formula for these types of films only makes it even more of a cliché and the contemporary twist that it now concerns a lesbian couple instead of an oversexed macho man and a prudish girl only makes the story even more unbelievable and certainly not better. The premise of the film – during the time of the hippies, casts were made of the penises of men who held high positions, making them blackmailable if those dildos fell into the wrong hands – is the most unbelievable of all , because how can one be sure which dildo belongs to which man, and at the same time the most original and best idea of the film because it consciously turns the sexualization or 'commodification' of the woman's body on its head by sexualizing the male body.

Nice in itself, but also hit and miss and certainly not completely successful. I especially didn't find Margaret Qualley very credible. Geraldine Viswanathan did better, but also plays too much of a character to really convince. Domingo does better and Bill Camp in particular is very funny. Visually fine and the editing is occasionally funny. In any case, there is something special here every now and then and that is nice. Furthermore, the film really lacks urgency and, partly due to its length, this thing feels too much like a snack. Nice music from Funkadelic. 3.0*.
