Nightman is a film that is liberally sprinkled with classic elements that make a horror film so atmospheric. I like that. A family trauma. A return to the place of birth. City people in the countryside. A dark secret. Nightmares. A castle ruin with a legend attached to it. Disturbing village characters. A few rednecks. A mother complex. Illegal medical experiments. A reform school with a terrible history. Sleepwalking. And even more family trauma. Nightman by director and co-writer Mélanie Delloye leaves almost no genre cliché unused.

Enough material. Too much. Delloye is unable to make it into a smooth whole. Many storylines have little connection with the basic story and are not properly developed. They are superfluous. Loose sand. In the long run, a confusing mess of undeveloped threads is created, some of which actually have exciting potential. The threads then get stuck there. In the potential. Why all that effort when Delloye actually only wants to tell the basic story of pregnant Alex who moves into his parental home with her husband and begins to doubt her sanity there. That is where the continuous focus should have been, possibly accompanied by a single well-developed secondary storyline that contributes significantly to Alex's increasing mental instability. A better dosage of lines would have resulted in a better film.

The good performance of Zara Devlin who gives shape to the character Alex, is one of the bright spots of the film. The excellent camera work that provides the film with atmospheric images of the landscape, gives the film a successfully gloomy appearance. However atmospheric, the lack of narrative focus and the influx of undeveloped clichés prevent that good basic atmosphere from emerging anything that is genuinely intriguing.
