It is 1917 when Edward [Gonçalo Waddington] decides to abandon Molly [Crista Alfaiate], to whom he had been engaged for seven years, just before the wedding in Rangoon. He rests in Asia and an hour later (in the film) Molly does it all over again. In principle, it is an adventure story in which Gomes and his team have omitted any semblance of adventure in favor of a dry narrative voice. What remains are pieces of artistically intended urban mosaic full of traditional culture and a few dutiful dramatic scenes. The visual artists deliver beautiful work and Gomes has certainly made a special, idiosyncratic, challenging film. Unfortunately, it is mainly pretentious and extremely boring. Earplugs are a must for a karaoke performance at the end. Gomes won the prize for best director at the only festival that believes that "different" is a synonym for "good." Joe guessed it: Cannes.
