A Miike on Netflix. That doesn't happen often, at least not in the Netherlands.

Miike is my childhood hero and he is still making a name for himself. Although he now seems to have reached the age where he no longer produces 5 films a year. With Lumberjack the Monster he manages to combine the slick elements of American Psycho and the Indonesian/Japanese Killers. I even see Kitamura's Sky High in it here and there.

Lawyer Ninoyima works in a no-nonsense manner and does not lose sleep if he has to deal with dead bodies. One day he enters into a conclave with a masked serial killer and survives an attack. He becomes so obsessed with his attacker that he bites the dust to find him. However, that will now be a bit more difficult, because during his operation he was fitted with a chip that stimulates his conscience; something he didn't have before.

His nerdy colleague is a little more comfortable with ruthlessness and we gradually get closer to the serial killer himself, who mainly hunts the bottom layer of society. But why on him? This creates a surprising climax.

Miike shows with this project that he is still in top form and keeps up with the times. It seems that low budget is no longer in his dictionary. His career has probably opened a new chapter.

Fine film indeed, in my opinion Miike's best. Slow and sluggish but the pace is still fine which makes this film, despite the horror and the story, easy to watch. Acting is reasonable, visually also nice (not super special) but the story and the search are captivating enough and the atmosphere is often well captured. Also many side plots that don't always work that well on their own (I thought the role of the lawyer's friend was a bit odd) but do contribute to the setting. A typical detective actually that is entertaining and expertly made (and therefore captivates and entertains) but is never special and never really colors outside the lines (and therefore doesn't blow me away or really touch me). 3.5*.
