The platinum blonde actress Kim Novak started her Hollywood career in the 1950s at the Columbia film studio. The hope was that she would compete with MGM superstar Marilyn Monroe, but it soon became apparent that Kim Novak would not be molded into just any shape. She kept control of her career firmly in her own hands for years, until she abruptly turned her back on Hollywood at the age of 33 to become an artist.

Although this biographical documentary benefits from the collaboration of Kim Novak herself, its form is a static combination of photographs and film fragments. Fortunately, the commentary provides interesting background information about this intended competitor of Marilyn Monroe who literally and figuratively refused to be put in a straitjacket. She had to fight for her identity (up to her name) and abruptly turned her back on Hollywood in 1966. Novak, with her rebellious behavior, appears to have been an important champion of the changes Hollywood has undergone in recent years. As a Hitchcock fan, I would have expected Menéndez to add that Novak was not the first choice for Vertigo. A not insignificant detail that she unfortunately ignores. But maybe I'm taking it more seriously than necessary.
