I thought it was mediocre, but based on the reactions I received from the audience, I am more likely to be alone in this.

The premise of the film is of course very fascinating - when is there consent and when is it not? In the film it quickly becomes clear that this was not there for young Zara.

Director Molly Manning Walker fails to really initiate a fascinating dialogue about the theme. In fact, she rarely explores the gray areas and, in my opinion, fails to sufficiently deepen her theme. The fact that the characters themselves remain on the surface - we only get uncomfortable facial expressions - is perhaps a statement that such experiences are still too taboo or considered normal, but it does not actually make it any more interesting.

Walker uses a lot of time in her introduction to create the context: the revelry merely serves as a facade for an uncomfortable coming-of-age and a searching generation (we already saw a similar thing in Spring Breakers), but that's because does not always turn out well. I must also say that I did not find the characters very layered and, overall, not always well acted.

How to Have Sex isn't dramatic in any way, but don't set your expectations too high.

Subtly developed film about three friends, looking for their first sexual experience, in the party destination Malia on the north coast of Crete. Particularly well-hit in terms of atmosphere and clearly a very personal project by director Molly Manning Walker. Mia McKenna-Bruce is excellent in the leading role and manages to convey the uncomfortable and poignant underlying theme of the film in an understated manner. It is also impressive how the initial noise and bustle increasingly fades into the background, after which the film ends in an almost silent manner.

Uncomfortable film about a teenager who goes on holiday with her friends to a “techno paradise” on Crete to lose her virginity. This results in a shocking disillusionment for her. It's annoying that these young men keep getting away with that. Excellent directorial debut by Molly Manning Walker with a thoughtful, subdued leading role by Mia McKenna-Bruce.
