Fleeing political violence, Berlian and her teenage daughter Daya are forced to leave their home by the sea. A depressing film about an overprotective mother and her daughter who have to survive in a desolate environment, where they have to dig out their house every morning. Due to the father's long-awaited homecoming, they end up out of the rain. I suspect you need to know a thing or two about the local culture to understand the symbolism of the film. That was not given to me and that is why I am left with rather ambivalent feelings. The images of the surroundings are often spectacular, but what the filmmakers want to tell with this film unfortunately eludes me.
