Filip plot

1943. Filip is a worldly seducer who seems to feel no deeper emotions. In Poland he lost his entire family. Alone, in the heart of Nazi Germany, he hides his Jewish roots and tries to escape death. He works as a clerk in an exclusive hotel, where he enjoys the charm of a life full of luxury, beautiful women and international friends. But when the war takes its bloody toll on the people closest to him, his carefully constructed world collapses like a house of cards.

Where better to hide as a Jew than in the heart of Germany under the eyes and moustaches of the Nazis? That is exactly what Filip does. He escaped deportation and works as a waiter in a restaurant under a false identity. But there is both anger and fear of death in that man. He and his French friend live the high life and regularly go swimming, flirt with women and they do not lack food. But living within the Nazi dictatorship also has a price.

The war is seen from a completely different perspective and that makes it quite special. Filip is played very well by Kulm, and the scene where he mentally breaks penetrated to the marrow. In the meantime he falls in love with a German student, but the film otherwise feels a bit rudderless. It is not clear where the film is heading, and that is why I found the ending to be rather hastily finished and not a logical end point after everything that happened before. It is as if the film stops halfway through. Filip is mainly a psychological portrayal of a man under extreme pressure, and that works better. It lacks something for me to give it a 3.5*, so half a point less.
