Augure has passed a bit in the halls. However, this was the Oscar nominee for Belgium as best foreign film. He didn't make the shortlist. Not incomprehensible when you see the rest. Not that it's a bad movie, but still a bit special.

Augure is a film about witchcraft, sorcery and superstition. These are certain cultural practices that can still occur in rural Africa. Koffi experiences great tension between his roots and his new life. Not that he has any doubts, but his past continues to haunt him when he visits his family again.

It is a film with several storylines. The plot line of those artists with pink tutus distracted me a little too much, although I understand that they see illness in the same boat as Koffi and his sister Tshala. She is also free-spirited and has her own more modern views that clash with the family's traditions.

Augure is especially atmospheric and it is fun to immerse yourself in African culture. Beautifully depicted. Decent film, but nothing more than that.

After living in Belgium for several years, Koffi [Marc Zinga] returns to his native Congo with his pregnant fiancée Alice [Lucie Debay] to get his family's blessing. He certainly doesn't receive a warm welcome and Alice has to watch as the family and local community subject Koffi to mystical, terrifying-looking rituals. This storyline is interrupted several times by what appear to be flashbacks, in which the leaders of two rival youth gangs challenge each other. I still don't know what the connection is between the different storylines and found it mostly confusing. Writer and co-writer Baloji has a sense of atmosphere and is a filmmaker to keep an eye on, but this debut film seems insufficiently accessible to Western viewers. It is innovative, hopefully that will prove to be a positive qualification in the future.
