Daniel Lee does it again.

A somewhat faded glory in terms of martial arts is put back in the spotlight here. It is not a film that reinvents the hot water, but that simply executes everything to perfection and thus offers what you as a viewer will sit down for. And I had been missing that for a while with these kinds of films.

Especially nice is the mix of classic Chinese fantasy and steampunk influences. It is certainly not an exaggeration, but it does add something, especially since there are already so many similar films. Furthermore, the CG is also okay, and especially not excessive in use.

The action scenes are strong and dynamic, the filler in between is also interesting, and the cinematography is top notch. Soundtrack and acting performances are less noticeable, but those are not immediately critical points in a film like this. In other words, fine viewing food for the enthusiast.

4.0* and a extensive review

Masked War

Entertaining action film with steampunk, comic and fantasy elements. Good direction and a balanced mix of CGI and live action. It is beautiful to watch and does not bore. The interchangeable plot and the interchangeable characters unfortunately also make this a film with a high "bite-swallow-gone" and "forgotten-again-tomorrow" content.

This confusing plot of who is on the good and bad side has gradually become transparent and predictable because there are so many similar films. Furthermore, what you may expect: tragic love, betrayal, few surprising twists, struggle for power. The formula has been done hundreds of times in Chinese/Hong Kong cinema. If it were not so strongly filmed, I might have added the word 'yawn'.
