El Castigo plot

Ana is behind the wheel. Next to her is Mateo, her husband. Together they drive through the woods. The tension in the car is to cut. Mateo begs her to return, but Ana drives on. After two long minutes, she finally turns around. At the place where they left their son Lucas, they only find his cap. What was intended as a punishment quickly turns into a nightmare for the parents. A wave of pent-up reflections, accusations and inconvenient truths emerges.

The classic image is of the mother as a 'slave' (providing for the child's necessities such as feeding) and that the father as 'authority' sets limits and thus prepares the child for social life outside the family (which may explain why fatherless boys go off the rails easily, as is the case with many Antilleans or blacks in the US), but this film is about a father and mother who seem to have the opposite role: the father is the 'good' because he wants to give the child everything and motivate it through rewards, while the mother is the 'good' one. evil one' is because she is the one who is strict and has a power struggle, through punishment, with the child who rebels against her. But in the end this also turns out to be very understandable and essentially no different from the fatherless situation: the father is therefore the breadwinner absent and can play the role of his son's boyfriend in the evenings and weekends, while the mother has been given the parenting tasks for which she had to sacrifice herself and that has emptied her life so that deep down she hopes that the child who fled from her will not be found. The film is slow and has little substance, but the theme is interesting (and 'urgent' because of the criticism of the role of both parents in the current upbringing of children) and manages to convey this in the form of an interesting drama.

A classic theme: child is not easy and the parents do not agree on the punishment. Dad is gentle, Mom wants to set limits. And a theme that matters in 2023 in our society in which education must be perfect.

When Ana has put their son out of the car against Mateo's wishes and they return after a few minutes to pick him up again, the boy appears to have run off. A nice occasion to measure each other, like the couple in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. After a deadly boring introduction of five quarters of an hour, this happens in a beautifully acted monologue by Ana, where Mateo is watching a bit drowsy. The outcome is predictable.

Nothing but good about the acting of Antonia Zegers: she gives Ana depth. Néstor Cantillana tries hopelessly to make the role of father believable; he can't help it that the screenplay has forgotten about him, which also applies to Catalina Saavedra as the policewoman.

For the rest? Thin, very thin. Boring, predictable, flat, unemotional - you shrug your shoulders when the movie is over and you mutter "Too bad. On to the order of the day' (but I have no children).

Ana [Antonia Zegers] and Mateo [Néstor Cantillana] are looking for their son Lucas [Santiago Urbina] in a forest. Also because sunset is approaching, they call for the help of the police, who they tell that Lucas got lost when he had to go to the bathroom. A lie, that much we already know, but what is the reason for that lie? And what exactly happened? That unfolds painfully slowly in a thriller that should never have lasted longer than fifteen minutes. The fact that the film was filmed in a continuous take does not make it better in any way. The first part, in which Ana and Mateo do nothing but stroll through the woods and shout 'Lukas', is hard to get through. The title also broadly reveals what happened, so there is no mystery.
