Samsara plot

Dozens of young people live and study together in Buddhist temples in Laos. A young man crosses the river every day to read a text to an older woman that serves as a guideline to find the way in the afterlife. When the woman dies, her spirit begins a sensory journey to reincarnation in her next body. To complete the journey, you must entrust yourself to the sound and the light.

The first interactive film of my life.

In Laos, Buddhist boys prepare for a possible life as a monk in a temple. Further away, an old woman is dying.

After her death she is in a state of bardo, the transitional phase to a new life. It is unique how the film viewer also experiences this phase in light and sound.

In the third part the old woman is incarnated and the action moves to Zanzibar where women trade in seaweed.

I went to the movie theater with some skepticism and left the theater completely convinced.

The first part is set in Laos and revolves around teenager Amid [Amid Keomany], who regularly visits Mon [Simone Milavanh], a visually impaired woman who is dying, to read to her. The second part is set in Zanzibar, on the west coast of Tanzania and follows a group of women who harvest seaweed for soap production. It follows Juwairiya [Juwairiya Idrisa Uwesu] and the adventures of her goat Meena. Full of beautiful images and beautifully edited, but the first part is stiffly acted and has hardly any story, the second part has no story at all. The more than 10 minutes that connect the two storylines provide you with an indescribable, never equaled experience. 'The Parallax Test' from The Parallax View and 'The Stargate Sequence' from 2001: A Space Odyssey pale in comparison. Follow the instructions to the letter and be blown away. Too bad for the rest of the film, although Meena deserves an honorary award for 'best role of an animal'.

I was looking forward to this Samsara because of the good reviews the film received. But in the end it was a bit disappointing. It is more of an esoteric film about Buddhism with well-shot images and some religious-philosophical nonsense. I was perhaps not entirely in the mood to watch this.

A film with two stories actually that are bizarrely interwoven. Quite plotless also about daily life and reincarnation. No, I didn't feel it. Maybe try again sometime.
