Medardo [Antonio de la Torre] works in a saltpe mine in the Chilean desert and lives with his very young wife Mariá Magnolia [Bérénice Bejo] and his four children in a village managed by Hauser [Daniel Brühl] on behalf of the owners. When Medardo can no longer work due to an accident, his employer leaves him behind and the family must find another way to get out of debt. It is the 1960s and in the absence of television, the cinema provides the necessary distraction. Medardo's daughter María Margarita [Alondra Valenzuela] turns out to have a talent for retelling films, which makes her the breadwinner. Especially when a mother suddenly leaves her husband and four children. Valenzuela is a revelation as the young María Margarita (Sara Becker plays her as an adult), but Scherfig takes so many short turns that the second half in particular is very episodic and seems run-down. It drags from one incident to another without a dramatic build-up and then fizzles out.

I completely agree with the above. A compelling story unfolded that suddenly veered off into directions that had absolutely nothing to do with the previous one. A shame, because the beginning of the film absolutely had potential. The setting, characters and plot had me all the way to all those side roads.
