Het Beest van Amsterdam plot

The documentary 'The Beast of Amsterdam' tells the story of Jon Bluming (1933-2018) as he has arrived in the last phase of his life. The once imposing physique of the international martial arts legend is no more. He has survived two tias and feels his steely body shrivel. It doesn't make him any happier. He was once the founder of karate in Europe, Kyokushin Karate - or full-touch karate. Rough and hard.

Jon Bluming passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. Janic interviewed Bluming before his death and tells the rest of his life story in the form of sober animations and a voice-over. Bluming is internationally known as the developer of a martial art that includes elements of wrestling and karate and founded the International Budo Kaikan (IBK) with Kenji Kurosaki. The great respect for this man is evident from testimonies of some prominent Dutch professional martial artists. But Janic is just as interested in Bluming's early years, when he served as a volunteer in the Korean War. That period appears to have been decisive for the rest of his life. It's a pity that the televised version (on which this review is based) is barely an hour long, because I got the feeling that there was a lot more interesting to be gleaned from Jon Bluming's extraordinary life story.
