Folk tale of the Hutsuls, a people living in the Carpathians in western Ukraine. Ivan loses his brother and his father at a young age. The latter is killed by the neighbor during an argument. During his childhood, Ivan often spends time with the neighbor's daughter, Marichka, and the two fall in love. When 18-year-old Ivan is away from work for a few months in the summer, Marichka has an accident while rescuing a stray lamb. Ivan is inconsolable upon his return. He slowly recovers and marries Palagna. However, the marriage is a failure as Ivan is haunted by Marichka's ghost. Desperate, Palagna resorts to witchcraft with the local "wizard".
