Iraq's Invisible Beauty plot

Born in 1932 in Baghdad, Latif al Ani is known as the 'father of Iraqi photography'. He has been photographing his homeland for 30 years, long before wars will tear his country apart. His photographs, taken during Iraq's heyday, show a country we have rarely seen. When Saddam comes to power, Al Ani has to flee and he stops shooting.

Sahim Omar Kalifa invited the famous Iraqi photographer Latif Al Ani on a tour of his homeland, visiting places he had photographed since the 1960s in the service of the oil industry or the government. Al Ani is already well into his eighties and realizes that this is his last chance to see the beauty of Iraq with his own eyes and to capture it with his camera (or his phone). Some familiarity with Al Ani's work and with both his personal history and that of Iraq is a prerequisite for being able to appreciate it at its best.
