In America, true docudramas about kidnapped girls and women appear regularly. This television film differs from its theme companions because it mainly focuses on the unyielding willpower of the victim. The film itself is not special, the story is all the more.

A respectful kidnapping film, shot almost entirely from the victim's perspective. The sad thing about it is that Haley Harris's screenplay appears to be rather short-sighted and director Simone Stock can do little to improve it. The Girl Who Escaped divides itself into two halves: the kidnapping and the investigation. There is simply not enough time spent on either side to get a specific feeling about it, apart from some exciting and fascinating sequences. The background as well as the character of Katie Douglas herself indicate that luck was not an issue during the escape, but the limited approach almost exclusively gives the impression that it came about exclusively through luck. The melodramatic second half also has so little actual relationship development that you as a viewer are left with a relatively neutral feeling, but the acting by Douglas and Kristian Bruun is very convincing and the film is captivating with ease. A moderate review does not mean that I do not have unprecedented respect for the victim in question.

Someone who can escape certain death at the hands of a serial killer is really something special, but this film certainly wasn't that. It's ripe for BBC first, for grandma. And then the acting, just bad.....b-movie.

Watch almost any movie about serial killers or victims, and this was clearly one of the weaker ones.
