Film adaptation of an important episode from the life of Maria Montessori in 1900. Once again you are confronted with a male society in which there is hardly any room for an independent woman, let alone ideas in which love for the child should take a central place in life. education.

Well made, somewhat romanticized and cinematically straightforward.

Director: Léo Todorov

Courtesan and artist Lili d'Alengy [Leïla Bekhti] flees Paris to prevent her clientele from discovering that her daughter Tina [Rafaëlle Sonneville-Caby] is an “imbecile”. She ends up in Rome, where she meets Giuseppe Montesano [Raffaele Esposito] and Maria Montessori [Jasmine Trinca]. Maria was the first woman to successfully complete a university study in medicine and is working with Giuseppe on a method with which “imbeciles” like Tina can learn the basic knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic with the aim of promoting their independence and - important for the financiers – to give them the opportunity to make a useful contribution to society. Wandering biography is especially impressive when it focuses on the development of Tina and her classmates. Much later, Todorov and co-writer Catherine Paillé quite suddenly mention the importance of motherhood and the discrimination between Maria and Giuseppe. This underlines the lack of a clear vision that thwarts the undoubtedly good intentions of the makers.

Beautifully shot film with a feminist slant, which once again clarifies that men and women are equal and have equal rights without any form of oppression. Maria Montessori was one of those champions. The patriarchy at that time is well presented in all its shockingness. The learning method she developed is still relevant today. Good game Trinca and Bekhti
