A Human Position plot

Long blue hours characterize the summer nights in the sleepy harbor town of Ålesund, on Norway's west coast. Asta, a young journalist who works for the local newspaper, lives there in cozy domesticity. When she comes across the strange story of the forced deportation of a refugee, she finds new meaning in her work and life.

Wow. What a sublime way of saying or showing nothing, yet saying so much. Everyone has experienced personal things that are not visible in daily life, but still have a huge impact for some. Slowly something becomes clear of what Asta must have experienced, but not everything, and that makes this film so incredibly believable. Lots of long, repetitive shots, but what a feast for the eyes. The last few moments in the film are very moving. Again, wow.

I read somewhere on the internet: the most boring movie ever made. I thought that was funny. Maybe it is. Because this 'little' Norwegian film is certainly not a dime a dozen film. Many long static shots, distant camera angles, images whose meaning is not always clear. There isn't much story either. The main character is a young reporter, with a somewhat grumpy look, who seems to have just recovered from an operation and/or trauma. She makes a report about the Art Nouveau architecture in Alesund, but unfortunately we don't get to see much of it. Empty streets without cars. Alesund must be beautiful by the way.

This contrasts with the images of a dilapidated attic across the street from her apartment. Her friend's house? That was not clear to me. A lot of interior images, which I couldn't always place. Her friend restores special chairs. So we will get to see them. The young reporter discovers a strange case. About an integrated and hard-working asylum seeker who is deported for a futility. We don't get the outcome of her quest. Yet there is much to enjoy in this 'boring' film. I do like films in which apparently little happens, but in which you have to read between the lines.
