It took the director 24 years to make a film about his father and the result is a strong piece of nepotism. Neil Bogart has been virtually forgotten by the general public. That's partly because it was just another pseudonym for Neil Scott Bogatz, but probably also because his life story isn't very interesting. An entrepreneur at heart who launched the first independent record label, Casablanca Records, in 1974 with a disastrous performance by Kiss, as well as producing such classics as "Wooly Bully" by Sam The Sham & The Paraohs, "It's Your Time" by The Isley Brothers, Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Rainy Night In Georgia," and Donna Summer's classic sex record "Love To Love You Baby." The music is certainly good, thanks to guest appearances from the likes of Tayla Parx, Jason Derulo, Wiz Khalifa and Pink Sweat$. Jordan doesn't have enough charisma to make Bogart more interesting than I thought he was.

I agree with mrklm, the main character is not such a fascinating character and the film will never live up to that. Nice atmospheric images and beautiful photography in a yellow-gold (Gold!) glow constantly, very nice to look at. But all the roles of the well-known artists just hang around and the film meanders along without ever really becoming interesting. But it takes a very long time. 1.5*.

A bird's-eye view of Neil Boga(r)t(z), the man behind Casablanca Records. The film remains superficial, which is a shame. Too much stuff in one piece doesn't work well, but it was also characteristic of Neil's short life. A lot... The cover versions are great. For today's youth, it's a nice glimpse into the world of the past. The label's revival with Summer's "I Love to Love You, Baby" in the 12" supermaxi is well-performed and is also a brilliant track, as it had never been done before. Entertaining, easy to watch, but unfortunately lacking in depth... 3.2*
