Addicted to Life (Marieke Vervoort: The Right to Die, Gave Her the Will to Live) plot

Marieke 'Wielemie' Vervoort suffered from a rare degenerative muscle and spine disease that left her increasingly paralyzed. From the age of 20 she needed a wheelchair. Still, it didn't stop her from getting the most out of life and on top of that achieving impressive sports performances. With flying colors she won a gold and a silver medal at the Paralympic Games. But the excruciating pain became more and more unbearable. In 2019, the Paralympic champion took her life into her own hands and decided to request euthanasia.

Looking back at the life of Marieke Vervoort, a Belgian top athlete who signed a document for voluntary euthanasia in 2008. The diagnosis was prompted by a diagnosis of progressive myelopathy, a devastating disease that would increasingly paralyze her and cause her increasingly severe pain. But it was not until 2019 that Marieke ended her life and in the years between the diagnosis and her death she grew into a top athlete with a wheelbarrow of records and Paralympic medals. A powerful plea for voluntary euthanasia from a widely admired person. Rapaport unfortunately stretches the inevitable ending unnecessarily long, even though this is as much an ode to life as to (assisted) death.
