On December 29, 1966, when Rosalia [Claudia Gusmano], after endless insistence, accepts an invitation for a date from Lorenzo [Dario Aita], the son of the local 'boss'. It ends in a rape, but in this kind of strict religious village communities it is good practice that this is settled with a marriage. For this, the man is legally immune from legal prosecution. Despite enormous personal and social pressure, Rosalia refuses to marry Lorenzo. That means she could charge Lorenzo with rape, but in a land of traditions and in a courtroom for white, older men, she doesn't seem to stand a chance. The only one willing to act as her lawyer is Amadeo [Francesco Colella], a middle-aged man who has also been left out because he couldn't or wouldn't get married. A historically relevant case that could have resulted in a film á la To Kill A Mockingbird , Inherit The Wind or Anatomy Of A Murder, but Savina's direction is so colorless that there is no dramatic build-up. The verdict is therefore not a highlight, more the moment when the candle blows to dust after much insistence. Gusmano deserved a better director.

A trifle indeed, but picked up because it was free. Very incoherent set of drama followed by quite bad casting. The film lacks credibility and the right emphasis. Although it is a true story, I never had that feeling.

It's all handled very quickly or cursorily. The court alone, the testimonies. It wasn't very convincing. None of the characters appealed to me, which is partly due to the poor casting, but also due to the screenplay or minimal scenes.

It is indeed poignant how religion and certain patriarchal traditions were maintained in those small remote villages. And Sicily is an island, which is somewhat different from the mainland. The context of the film is really the only thing that kept me watching. I saw quite a few European films about the position of the Catholic Church in daily life sometime in the 1960s. This was not very nice, to say the least. It was something in every country...

Dramatized reconstruction about a young woman's resistance to a more or less forced marriage to her rapist, as tradition dictates. Nice film, although it mainly focuses on the lawsuit at the expense of the underlying drama.
