Paris late 19th century. Charles Swann, a wealthy Jewish intellectual, has penetrated and accepted into Paris' high society despite anti-Semitism. He has an affair with Odette, a girl from the lower social class. Despite the fact that his entire circle of friends warns him and he doesn't actually love her, he still marries her, which leads to a social suicide. Parallel to this is the story of Swann's friend, the gay Baron de Charlus, and his attempts to seduce an unwilling young man.
