Kerstappels plot

Things are coming under quite a bit of pressure at the 'Oogappels' families this Christmas and that is a celebration of recognition. Erik and Chris actually want to skip the holidays for a year. Fabie faces a big disappointment and Carola and Marcel are startled by a shocking event during Christmas dinner. The atmosphere at Tim and Dina also leaves much to be desired, after a Christmas party at Tim's work that got out of hand. The grandparents know exactly what's going on and, as always, provide razor-sharp commentary: the more we do our best to suppress everything that is complicated or negative, the greater the chance of violent explosions.

Seasons 1&2 were still fun, then it gets less and less per episode. It all seemed to go nowhere; in the 4th season everything and everyone is exactly the same as in the first. No one dies, anyway this series should not have cliffhangers, at some point that eternal rippling gets boring. What the series has to rely on is the recognisability: insecurities, doubts of characters that we all have, setbacks, everyday worries, contemporary stress..

In this film, too, it is all as usual. The happy neighbor who is always overly enthusiastic and Merel who always responds with rolling eyes. That's still nice 2 or 3 times, but not 26 times. By the way, Malou Gorter plays fantastically and I think she carries the series. The film itself does feel warm, although it is of the kind of Christmas heat that I dread, like in a Jumbo Christmas commercial, something like that.. and there were a few (slightly) moving scenes.

What I'm not such a fan of are those 'everything was better back in the day' conversations of those grandmothers and grandfathers in between. "..that strange magic that Christmas used to have is a bit gone." That's right again.

Can't get enough of those syrupy, kitschy Christmas commercials (supermarkets have a knack for them) where big problems are solved in 30 seconds with a fancy Christmas dinner with family? Then you will undoubtedly give this a higher rating. This is a collection of that kind of wafer-thin family dramas with the theme of the importance of being together. An impressive cast, but I hope that this is also cringe-inducing for the average viewer.
