Femicide plot

Every eight days a woman is murdered in the Netherlands. The (former) partner is almost always the perpetrator and the woman's choice to be independent is the cause. Femicide is often portrayed in the media as a family or family drama, but it is not. Why is femicide so underexposed? Why is the animal not called by its name? And why are we warned about the man in the bushes, while women are the most at risk in their relationship? Relatives of victims of femicide share their story and also discuss the taboo attached to the term femicide, murder of women because they are women.

Every eight days a woman in the Netherlands is murdered by her male partner. Nadine, Nasrim, Gea and Eva, four women of different ages and with different backgrounds, are victims of femicide. Herder speaks with relatives of these women and makes it clear that this can happen to anyone. Narcissism is mentioned as an explanatory factor, but Herder and Strating chose to only let the relatives of the victims speak. The intentions are good, but to provide more insight into the causes of femicide and its prevention, a more scientific approach is needed and the cooperation of relatives of the perpetrators. The makers leave them out of consideration in a documentary that is mainly a cry for attention.
