It is 2019 and the Minister of Health and Social Care [Nicholas Burns], on the advice of Colin Colman [Russell Tovey], has decided to close Bethlehem Hospital because it is not operating efficiently enough. Volunteers are trying to save the day and while waiting for an award to be presented to Sister Gilpin [Jennifer Saunders], staff and the elderly 'temporary residents' are trying to get through their days as best they can. When Colin's father [David Bradley] is admitted to Bethlehem, he discovers the value of the care provided there. The screenplay by Heidi Thomas, based on the play of the same name by Alan Bennett, has heart on its sleeve and is unnecessarily preachy, especially at the end. The cross-section of staff and patients is, well, very average. But Jennifer Saunders is formidable, eschewing all clichés as the no-nonsense veteran of geriatrics. Her scenes with Bradley provide some wonderful moments in this well-meaning but one-sided plea for the National Health Service and nurses in general.

Judi Dench is quite signed for this film, but her screen time is actually very limited. It is someone who draws attention to a film and that was also the reason for me to see the film (faster). A film like that about nursing homes is usually a rather unpleasant, dreary affair. Even though the theme is close to my heart, I'm not a huge fan of it.

However, Beth tries to breathe some positive life into the declining idea of "waiting for death" through the empathetic care of all care providers for their residents. Admirable to see. Some humor at times, making this tragicomedy quite entertaining. Do you still have the subplot of the great capitalist sword of Damocles who wants nothing more than to close the money-guzzling institution because it is not efficient.

I didn't see the real plot twist coming because I didn't think it was going to be that kind of movie. I was shocked by it, but these are issues that occasionally make it into the media. Not a bad film, but perhaps it could use a little more spice. I already saw Ken Loach passing by here, well yes, I should have let him do his thing with this.
