Fairyland plot

After her mother's death, little Alysia moves to San Francisco with her father Steve in the 1970s. Here Steve develops his writing talent further and enters the gay dating world. His bohemian lifestyle regularly conflicts with what his environment expects of him as a parent. Alysia grows up as an independent young woman and her bond with her father is thoroughly tested.

Gay country.

In theory, the title could also be translated as "fairy tale land," and perhaps that, too, is a valid translation to indicate the blessed, free, and carefree period in Haight-Ashbury in the 1970s. When everyone could be themselves, where everyone was allowed to be themselves. After the sexual revolution of the 1950s and 1960s, with medical contraception, which brought about a liberation from the traditional constraints of reproduction and productivity, to the liberation of forms of society not primarily based on reproduction and economic principles. Or, to put it much more simply, the triumph of love over money.

In that context, we see the story of Alysia Abbott—adorably played by Emilia Jones. Where do we know her from again? Oh yeah, she was that sweet girl who helped Billy Connolly with his Viking funeral in What We Did On Our Holiday (2014). So not that all that was self-evident, of course—just like what I remember of the liberal neighbors from that time, or what went on in my house—or how things went with Billy Connolly in that film. Every era has its own challenges.

In that sense, it's a rather personal document about the girl Abbott's childhood—yes, n=1, and how you compare that to someone who didn't grow up during the AIDS epidemic, but during COVID, isn't a simple question. Perhaps it's a valid observation to say that every generation faces its own challenges, and there's undoubtedly a nice quote from some Greek or Roman philosopher on that topic—left as an exercise for the reader, or how can I just get away with it?

And then I'll just let it slide for a moment to say anything about the average parent-child relationship. What we see in the film is certainly a positive outlier in that regard, let me just say that most traditional families don't even come close.
