Jasaneobo plot

"Born as noble, one dreams to be humble. Born as humble, the other dreams to be noble."

In early 19th century Korea, the scholar Jeong Yak-jeon is exiled to Heuksando Island for his adherence to Catholicism. This is contrary to the Confucianism promoted by the royal family. There he meets the young fisherman Chang-dae who wants to advance in society by reading the great works of literature. Chang-dae knows all about the fish and plants in the sea. It inspires Jeong Yak-jeon to write a book about his maritime knowledge.

After the sudden death of the Korean king in 1801, Yag jeon Jeong [Sol Kyung-gun] was exiled to an island because his adherence to Catholicism would threaten the Confucianism that forms the basis of Korean social life. There he finds shelter with Mrs Gageo [Lee Jeong-eun] and her ambitious son Chang Dae [Yo-Han Byun]. Bitterness over his fate slowly turns into renewed inspiration as Yag jeon Jeong learns more about Chang Dae and sets himself up as a mentor. Beautifully filmed in black and white, the lesser-known brother of the famous Jeon Yak-yong (who was banished to another place) is superbly acted, gives insight into the life of an isolated community at the beginning of the 19th century, but is also a plea for religious and philosophical tolerance without being too preachy about it.
