The Porters plot

The Flemish filmmaker Sarah Vanagt asks Brussels youths in all sorts of public places in the city to play the well-known memory game I-go-on-travel-and-take-along. It will be a bitter version, because the game material is an 8,000-item packing list from a colonial expedition in the former Belgian Congo. A spear is mentioned, ten beetles, an ivory horn, an elephant hair necklace, but also 140 meters of film with images of fighting pygmies.

Mediocre to quite boring documentary from which fortunately I can get the idea of the clue. Using a play on words, you can take a look - which can be both critical and explanatory - at the raids that raged through colonial Congo somewhere at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The summary suggests that it was about much more than just rubber or a wild animal. It was about an entire culture being stolen.

It was also interesting that the young people asked why the majority (the indigenous population) allowed themselves to be so dominated by a few whites with some weapons. It is a question that can be asked on hundreds of occasions throughout history. Every now and then a (bloody) uprising or even revolution arises.
