The Spanish-Dutch filmmaker Carmen Cobos will have exclusive access to a group of musicians within the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: the percussion and timpani section. They play a supporting role, but are absolutely indispensable. Never in the spotlight, the public notices them especially during loud music passages. But there's more to these talented men than meets the eye. The skills of this group are so diverse and unique that in the orchestra's 135 years of existence, only 26 musicians were deemed virtuoso enough to be part of this team. Their special status gives them the freedom to choose their own instruments, manage their own space and interpret the music in their own way.

According to tradition, Bernard Haitink designated the percussion section of the Royal Netherlands Concertgebouw Orchestra as its own Republic within the orchestra. In concrete terms: he completely trusted the insight and craftsmanship of the percussionists for their part in the concerts and gave them little or no direction. This documentary focuses on the five members of this percussion section. The common thread is the upcoming farewell of timpanist Nick Woud and immediately makes it clear why percussionists are so dependent on themselves. A short lecture about what is involved in playing a triangle makes it clear that these musicians put their passion for their instrument into perspective with a pleasant sense of humour. Entertaining, but especially recommended for trained percussionists or percussionists who, just like the musicians portrayed, know how to separate the wheat from the chaff. For relative laymen it is now and then a bit dry fare.
