I give four points because of Trine Dryrholm, who is simply a wonderful actress, one of the many wonderful Danish actresses. I thought it was a pleasant film that was exciting enough.

A thriller drama from Denmark that takes place during a cruise. The film revolves around the relationship between a mother and a daughter. A relationship that is not going well and that is put under even more pressure by an unpleasant event.

Beautiful supporting role of Trine Dyrholm who plays the cool mother who is very keen to strengthen the bond with her daughter. That is not easy. She does not exactly behave like a model parent. She is not a sympathetic figure but she is fascinating. The film starts as a family drama and after the unpleasant incident it gets thriller-like tendencies. With the introduction of the thriller elements, things escalate and the mother manifests herself as a true fighter for truth and justice. It is impossible to say whether she is a good or a bad person. An interesting aspect of her character. In any case, she does not become more sympathetic. However, she remains fascinating.

The story is rather thin and not very exciting. There are not many developments and the film moves a bit in circles. The story is too long. Instead of focusing on the unpleasant event and the events that follow, the film could have invested more in the mother-daughter relationship. That development was initially quite exciting in a dramatic sense. That choice was not made, with the result that the relationship problems in the second part of the film are just a side issue. As a thriller, the film simply does not have enough to offer.

In contrast to the mother, the daughter remains an underexposed figure. There is also little investment in the other characters. With some characters you even wonder why they were given a place in the film. Their presence is only distracting. No, the film is carried by Trine Dyrholm. Fine role but there is no serious opposition and that is missed. Birthday Girl is not a great film.

For Cille's [Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl] 18th birthday, mother Nanna [Trine Dyrholm] treats her and her best friend Lea [Maja Ida Thiele] to a cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. They celebrate the birthday on the dance floor, where Nanna behaves like a best friend and not a mother. While intoxicated, Nanna sneaks off with a crew member [Sebastian De Mots] and after he rejects her advances, she returns to her cabin. The next morning, she discovers that Cille has not returned yet. Nanna finds her without panties and immediately suspects the worst when it turns out that Cille cannot remember what happened. During the investigation that follows, Nanna is mainly busy cleaning up her own act, despite everyone advising her to take care of her daughter. Excellently acted psychological drama about the vulnerable relationship between a divorced mother and a daughter she does not know as well as she thought. But even Dyrholm fails to generate sympathy for the self-centered, unsympathetic mother. It seems that Noer tried to rectify that in the melodramatic, confusing and utterly unbelievable final quarter that answers questions that did not need to be answered.
