When Spring Came to Bucha plot

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, places like Bucha, Borodyanka and Irpin were attacked and bombed. When the Russians withdrew a month later, the damage in the region was enormous. Buildings had collapsed, corpses lay on the street. Filmmakers Mila Teshaieva and Marcus Lenz arrived at lightning speed to show how residents emerged from the cellars, without explicitly showing the horrors of the war. That is not necessary either: the war trauma can be read on everyone's faces, including the volunteers, who rushed from all corners of the world to help.

After 35 days of fighting, the Ukrainian army has recaptured the Bocha district. This documentary shows how the residents try to pick up their lives after their hometown has been largely destroyed. Lenz and Teshaieve do not conduct interviews, but record residents, civil servants and a pastor during their attempts to convey a bit of hope. The conversations and discussions that arise there reveal that the liberation is “only” the first step in a long, complex and emotional process that must ultimately lead to some form of stability. A valuable addition to the many journalistic reports on the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
