Werner Herzog belongs to a group of German filmmakers who, in the mid-1960s, idiosyncratically moved away from the kitschy heimat film culture that had plagued the country for 30 years. The undisputed highlight of his oeuvre is without a doubt Fitzcarraldo and the collaboration with the exceptionally temperamental Klaus Kinski (who played the leading role in five of Herzog's films) is therefore extensively discussed. But Herzog also takes Van Steinaecker to his birthplace and to his favorite places, in Germany and in the US. A beautiful tribute to a veteran of the film world who is far from resting on his laurels and an excellent introduction for those who are not so familiar with the work of this unique author among film directors.

Nice, often very funny documentary about the sympathetic, pleasantly crazy director Werner Herzog. Life and work are presented in an entertaining way, with a lot of attention for his early films, which are the most interesting. The interviews with family and colleagues from the film world are a nice light-hearted addition, but the charismatic and enigmatic Herzog himself naturally demands the most attention. That crazy voice of his and those pseudo-philosophical statements... wonderful.
