A Compassionate Spy plot

"Did he betray his country to save the world?"

When physicist Ted Hall joined the top-secret Manhattan Project in 1943, he was the youngest scientist to develop the plutonium bomb. Hall was so shocked by the results that he decided to hand over the atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. He later called it an act of compassion. It was 1951, the height of the Cold War, and Hall's decision almost amounted to suicide—atomic spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg had been executed for less. Miraculously, Ted and his wife Joan managed to evade the FBI.

Ted Hall was the youngest member of the team of scientists who worked in complete secrecy under Robert Oppenheimer to develop the atomic bomb. Originally intended to pre-empt the Nazi development of a similar bomb, the socially-minded Hall foresaw early on the catastrophic consequences that could be if the US had a monopoly on this weapon, especially for the Soviet Union . With the help of his best friend Saville Sax, he shared crucial information about the project with Russia, a serious offense for which he could have received the death penalty. Only when he knew that he did not have long to live did he decide to share his secret, including in a filmed interview with his wife Joan, whom he met after the war and kept the secret with him for decades. In archive footage, Hall, who died in 1999, tells his side of the story, his family and that of Saville Sax place it in a historical context. A fascinating history lesson full of moral dilemmas that unfortunately has little to offer visually other than talking heads.
