Nightshot plot
"A haunting in real time"
Nathalie, an urban explorer, and her cameraman explore an abandoned sanatorium deep in the woods near the border between France and Germany and film their experiences. At first it's just the usual graffiti covered walls and mindless destruction. As the pair progress further into the facility, it begins to appear that they are not alone. It starts with sounds, escalates to doors that close on their own, a ouija board, blood on the floor and pictures of themselves entering the building. To make matters worse, they cannot find their way back to an exit, but find themselves deeper and deeper in the maze of similar corridors and rooms.

The French director Hugo König clearly wanted to experiment and this resulted in a found footage film with a single take for content, without deviating from the substantive essence. The location was well chosen for this, although unfortunately I cannot find where exactly this was recorded. In any case, it delivers a whole with a threatening and ominous atmosphere, certainly not without some nice horror images. The long run-up requires some patience as a viewer, but König seems to know where to send his camera to evoke the right fear. Nathalie Couturier's acting is also extremely convincing, although her character is somewhat restricted towards the second half. The constant sound interruptions hardly add anything and the twist is certainly a mess, but in the end Nightshot delivers a solid hour and a half of entertainment in which there is indeed a certain dread. That's a great thing to achieve when you clearly have few resources.
