Casanova proves himself with his second film.

It's clear that Skins wasn't just a fluke. He shows here that he has a clear signature, but also ensures that this is not an attempt at Skins 2. I don't know how long he can stick to this style (because after a while he will inevitably get used to it or even get bored), but those are concerns for later. So far I love it.

The link between the toxic mother-son relationship and North Korea may be a bit basic (and anyone who wants to make a link with Ki-duk should check The Net instead of Pieta), but it does provide an original design and some striking scenes, so that didn't bother me.

The soundtrack could also have been a little sharper, especially because it dares to go completely wild visually. The acting is also strong but not exactly subtle, and there are a number of scenes that you actually only see in a Casanova film (I don't include the birth by the way... I think I can make a reasonable list of that in the meantime). Hopefully he will continue this momentum for a while, this is 100% my kind of cinema.

4.5* and a extensive review
